October 2, 2019, 1:00 PM (CST)

The theme for this 9th annual event, “Walk more – Connect more” encourages Iowans to walk with friends, family members, classmates and co-workers in order to foster relationships and leverage additional health benefits. Walking is not only good for your physical health, including supporting joint health and decreasing the risk of heart disease and obesity, but is also beneficial for Iowans’ mental, social and emotional well-being.

St. Francis Manor, Seeland Park and the Hammond Center for Assisting Living will be a host site for the 30-minute walk around its campus on Wednesday, October 2 at 1:00 PM. The public is invited to participate in this walk which will start in front of St. Francis Manor’s main entrance and finish at the Social Center.

“We hope participants from the greater Grinnell area will join us for this annual event which provides an opportunity to walk and connect with others,” says Fitness Director Kayla Faas. “Many of our St. Francis Manor residents and Hammond Center for Assisted Living tenants would also enjoy the opportunity to get some fresh air and see the changing of the seasons. Any participants willing to push a resident/tenant in a wheelchair during the walk can contact me at (641) 269-5424 to be paired with a buddy.”

The Healthiest State Annual Walk serves as a kick-off event for Healthiest State Month in October. This year’s goal is to have walks registered in all 99 counties of Iowa with at least 900 total walks to celebrate the event’s ninth year. The Healthiest State Initiative is a privately led public initiative intended to inspire Iowans and their communities throughout the state to improve their health and happiness.

According to the 2017 Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index®, Iowa is #21 in the nation when it comes to being physically, emotionally, and mentally healthy. This ranking has moved since the Initiative was announced, but the overall well-being score has been fairly constant the past five years. To claim the #1 spot, we have work to do. It’s an ambitious goal, but with your help, we can change Iowa and show the rest of the nation the road to wellness.
