Strength in Motion: Mike Beck’s Journey to Recovery

October 9, 2025

In October, we celebrate National Physical Therapy Month to shine a light on the life-changing benefits of physical therapy. It's the perfect time to express our gratitude for the remarkable work of physical therapists (PT) and physical therapist assistants (PTA) like Jon Duke PT and Tim Stahl PTA who are dedicated to empowering individuals to reach their full potential.

Meet Mike Beck, a recent graduate of outpatient therapy, who shares his inspiring journey and experience at the Rehabilitation Clinic at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell below:

Mike Beck recently achieved a remarkable recovery at the Rehabilitation Clinic at St. Francis Manor, where he successfully completed physical therapy and regained the use of his arm without any pain. Mike's journey began when a scheduled shoulder replacement surgery was cancelled due to unexpected chest pain during pre-op. Following a four-day stay in the cardiac unit, Mike was told he'd have to wait six months for surgery, prompting him to explore alternative solutions. On the advice of his grandson-in-law, a physical therapist in Lincoln, Nebraska, Mike sought physical therapy and chose the Rehabilitation Clinic at St. Francis Manor due to its reputation, therapists, and convenience.

Through dedication and hard work, Mike made significant progress, increasing his arm's functionality from 10-20% to 60-70% and eliminating pain. He has resumed most daily activities, including driving and lawn mowing, and continues to maintain his progress through regular exercise in S.H.A.P.E. fitness classes and using the NuStep machine in the exercise room at the Hammond Center. Mike's surgeon was impressed with his improvement and released him from further treatment. Mike credits the clinic's therapists, Jon Duke and Tim Stahl, for their professionalism and accommodating nature, and highly recommends the Rehabilitation Clinic at St. Francis Manor to others seeking physical therapy.
